A series of events, including an exhibition showing the range of public appointments, help with CV-writing and advice sessions, have been taking place around the country to encourage a wider range of appointments to NHS boards and quangos.

Launching the week in Manchester, Dame Rennie Fritchie said she wanted to see people from differing cultural and ethnic backgrounds involved in public bodies: 'Earlier this year, Mori produced some research for my office which showed that only 35% of people knew about public appointments and over 63% believed that people were appointed because they knew the right people at the golf club.

'I hope that this week will alert more people and help build public confidence in the appointments process.'

As commissioner, Fritchie monitors and regulates procedures for ministerial appointments to executive, advisory and non-departmental public bodies.
