1 Oct 98
More than £1m has been received by the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL) in compensation for 46 of its members who were encouraged to leave the Teachers' Pension Scheme for private pensions.

Some of the victims have been fighting for compensation over the mis-selling for five years.

Marion Bird, ATL deputy head of pensions, criticised the financial companies involved for their tardiness in settling the claims. 'We are very concerned that there are still thousands of teachers who do not realise that they are disadvantaged by opting out of the Teachers' Pension Scheme,' she said.

The ATL has asked Treasury minister Patricia Hewitt to speed up the process.

A further 200 ATL-supported cases are still pending.
