MoD must improve financial management information, say MPs

14 Jan 14
MPs on the Commons defence committee have urged the Ministry of Defence to do more to improve its financial management information.

Noting that the National Audit Office qualified the MoD’s 2012/13 accounts, the seventh successive year in which auditors found errors, the MPs said ‘much needs to be done to remedy the poor state of inventory control’.

Committee chair James Arbuthnot said: ‘The provision of reliable management information is critical to the effective running of an organisation. In particular, the MoD should concentrate on improving its financial management information.’

The call came in the committee’s report on the MoD’s annual report and accounts, published today.

This also urged the MoD to boost the amount and quality of information contained in its annual report. For example, it should set out the readiness of the armed forces across all services, including data on the procurement and maintenance of defence equipment.
