Council leaders get New Year honours

Five council leaders are among the local government figures who have been recognised in the New Year's Honours list.

Among the awards, the leader of Kent County Council Paul Carter has been made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for services to local government.

Gordon Nicholson, the leader of Eden District Council has been made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to local government.

Three council leaders have been awarded the MBE – Member of the Order of the British Empire – for services to local government. They are the leader of Rushcliffe Borough Council Jonathan Clarke, Gloucestershire County Council leader Mark Hawthorne and Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead leader David Burbage.

In addition, Katherine Cutts, the former leader of Nottinghamshire County Council, has also received an MBE for services to local government, as has former Derbyshire County Council leader Andrew Lewer.

Other awards include an OBE for Ann Lucas, a councillor in Coventry and member of the Local Government Association’s safer and stronger communities board, and for Manchester City Council deputy chief executive Geoff Little.

The chief executive of North Somerset Council Graham Turner has been given an MBE for services to local government, while LGA vice-chair and leader of the independent group in local government Marianne Overton also received an MBE.

Local government secretary Eric Pickles said the awards showed the recipients had made an ‘extraordinary contribution’ to society.

‘It’s testament to their services to the local community that their hard work, dedication and achievements have been recognised in this way,’ he added.
