Labour leader Ed Miliband has appointed former shadow chief secretary to the Treasury Rachel Reeves to the shadow work and pensions brief in a reshuffle of his frontbench team.

Other changes see the historian Tristram Hunt appointed to shadow Education Secretary Michael Gove, while Mary Creagh becomes shadow transport secretary.

Reeves has replaced Liam Byrne, who has been demoted to shadow minister for higher education, while Hunt takes the place of Stephen Twigg, who is moved to shadow minister for political and constitutional reform.
Among the other changes, Chris Leslie, who covered for Reeves during her maternity leave, has now been appointed to chief secretary to the Treasury role full-time.

Emma Reynolds has been named shadow housing minister, replacing Jack Dromey, who is now shadow police minister. Former Lord Chancellor Lord Falconer has been asked to advise Miliband on planning and transition into government.

Shadow chancellor Ed Balls, shadow health secretary Andy Burnham and shadow local government secretary Hilary Benn all remain in post.

The shadow cabinet reshuffle took place yesterday as Prime Minister David Cameron reorganised his ministerial ranks.
