Special measures have been introduced at the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust after an outbreak of psuedomonas killed three premature babies at the city’s Royal Maternity Hospital
There have also been problems with the accident and emergency department at the trust’s Royal Victoria Hospital.
The measures mean there will be enhanced and more frequent oversight of the trust by Northern Ireland’s Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety. Regular governance meetings will check the standards of service provision and patient safety. The trust has also been instructed to develop a plan to deal with problems.
Health Minister Edwin Poots said: ‘I have expressed my deep disappointment to the trust and informed them that I fully expect that these measures must bring about an improvement. It is important the Belfast trust has my full confidence and that of the public.’
Trust chief executive Colm Donaghy said the special measures will help reassure patients and their families.
