Individuals from across the public sector have once again had their work recognised in the latest round of honours.

The Queen’s Birthday Honours List, published on June 11, includes knighthoods for two former Ofsted chiefs, Chris Woodhead and David Bell. Bell is now permanent secretary at the Department for Education and, before joining Ofsted, was chief executive of Bedfordshire County Council. He is an honorary CIPFA member.

Also knighted were: Edward Lister, who was until last month leader of the London Borough of Wandsworth; Harry Burns, Scotland’s chief medical officer; and Paul Williams, chief executive of NHS Wales.

New dames in the list include CIPFA member Ruth Carnall, chief executive of the London Strategic Health Authority, and Elish Angiolini, the former Lord Advocate for Scotland and the first woman to hold the post.

In local government, there were CBEs for Richard Kemp, a Liverpool councillor and Liberal Democrat vice-chair of the Local Government Association; Joanna Simons, chief executive of Oxfordshire County Council; and CIPFA member Gavin Whitefield, chief executive of North Lanarkshire Council.

Another CIPFA member, Eifion Williams, director of finance at Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board, received the MBE for services to the NHS in Wales.

Elsewhere, Peter Neyroud, chief executive of the National Policing Improvement Agency, received the CBE as did Alan Clarke, chief executive of the regional development agency One North East. CBEs also went to Gillian Leng, deputy chief executive of the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence, and Tony McGuirk, Merseyside’s chief fire officer.

In Northern Ireland, there was a CBE for former chief education inspector Stanley Goudie and an MBE for Martin McDonald, chief executive of the province’s rural development council.
