Two Suffolk districts are to share senior managers in a move claimed to save £400,000 a year.

Suffolk Coastal and Waveney district councils already share the services of chief executive Stephen Baker, the head of planning and an audit manager.

Under proposals approved this week by the two council Cabinets, Baker will oversee four directors and nine heads of service. This is a reduction of five posts, four of which are vacant and one pending retirement.

Suffolk Coastal leader Ray Herring and his Waveney counterpart Mark Bee said in a joint statement: ‘This is a pragmatic way forward, responding effectively to the reality of the world in which we find ourselves, where finances are tight, and the government and the public are looking to us to prepare solutions.’

The two councils have declared each other ‘preferred partners’ and are reviewing all their services to see if they should be integrated.

At the CIPFA Facing the Cuts summit last week, local government minister Bob
Neill praised ‘innovative’
moves by councils to save money by sharing senior management teams.
