Lord chief justice Lord Judge has backed punitive sentences for those convicted of being involved in the supply or conversion of weapons.

A Court of Appeal hearing on October 6 dismissed a number of appeals from men accused of gun-related crime.

Judge said: ‘The gravity of gun crime cannot be exaggerated. Sentencing courts must address the fact that too many lethal weapons are too readily available. Too many are carried, too many are used, always with devastating effect on individual victims and with insidious corrosive impact on the wellbeing of the local community.’

He added that people convicted of such crimes should continue to be held until it was established that they were no longer a danger to the public.
