There will be a million young people not in education, employment or training within months, a Local Government Association report has warned.

In Hidden talents: re-engaging young people, produced jointly with the Centre for Social Justice, the LGA argues that the existing system for getting young people into work is disjointed and not tailored enough to individuals.

The June 30 report shows that the number of Neets has risen from 743,000 in 2005 to 935,000 today – which includes 72,000 people who became unemployed at the end of 2008 and the beginning of 2009.

The proportion of people out of work aged between 18 and 24 has risen by a third in recent months, and now stands at 16.1%.
