Councils in seaside resorts are to be allowed to give planning permission for beach huts, cafes and car parks, even in areas at risk of coastal erosion, in an effort to boost local economies.

But, according to the Department for Communities and Local Government, ‘inappropriate residential development such as housing’ will continue to be banned in such areas.

Housing and planning minister John Healey said: ‘Coastal communities are having to think hard about their long-term future and viability as climate change accelerates the risk of coastal erosion. It’s vital that we react to environmental challenges as well as economic challenges and ensure that coastal communities can carry on.’ The Environment Agency is mapping coastal erosion rates for the next 100 years to give communities a better idea of how the changing coastline will affect them.
