Work and Pensions Secretary James Purnell has announced an independent review into how to help people with mental health problems into employment.

The announcement was made as part of a continuing reform of the welfare system, which aims to help those most excluded from the labour market, including people with severe mental health problems.

The review will be led by Dr Rachel Perkins of the South West London & St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust.

The trust has been following the individual placement and support approach, which has succeeded in getting 60% of people with severe conditions into work.
