Scottish local authority employers and trade union leaders met this week in an attempt to resolve the pay dispute that led to a one-day strike by 150,000 workers.

The August 20 action paralysed public services, with hundreds of schools, libraries and leisure centres closed and bins left uncollected.

Unions, including Unison, Unite and the GMB, took the action after rejecting an offer of 2.5% over each of the next three years.

Dougie Black, Unison regional officer, said members wanted a settlement that protected them from inflation and did not lock them into multi-year awards.

The Convention of Scottish Local Authorities offered the talks last week 'as a matter of urgency'.
