Councils, campaigners and industry officials met this week to discuss ways of saving post offices threatened with closure.

The Local Government Association said the aim of the May 14 conference was to 'look to the future and consider how councils could help support post offices in the longer term'.

Around 50 local authorities, with implicit government approval, have expressed an interest in taking over post offices under threat or relocating them within council-owned buildings such as schools and libraries.

Essex County Council has already set aside £1.3m in the hope of saving 15 of its 31 threatened post offices.
