Voluntary sector leaders have welcomed the government's commitment to put the sector's funding on a more stable footing.

The Treasury's and Cabinet Office's interim report on the future role of the third sector was published alongside the Pre-Budget Report last week.

Chancellor Gordon Brown promised that in next year's Comprehensive Spending Review, three-year funding for voluntary organisations would be the norm.

Stephen Bubb, chief executive of the Association of Chief Executives of Voluntary Organisations, said he was 'delighted' by the announcement.

Stuart Etherington, chief executive of the National Council for Voluntary Organisations, said: 'It is now important the government's warm words are embedded on the ground.

'Funding problems are particularly acute at a local level. Buy-in from local public sector bodies will be critical.'

Partnerships in public services: an action plan for third sector involvement set out measures that will remove the barriers preventing voluntary sector organisations from becoming more involved in the delivery of public services.
