Better links need to be established between education bodies and business if the quality of vocational courses is to be improved, according to the chief schools inspector.

Ofsted head David Bell said a national partnership between schools and industry could help to provide leadership and direction in the development of vocational education. 'Increasingly, many professions require young people to take vocational routes through education,' Bell said.

'It is therefore essential that vocational courses are tailored to the needs of employers, are taught by teachers with relevant experience and are recognised with the high esteem they deserve.'

Bell was addressing a November 15 conference considering some of the implications of Mike Tomlinson's review of 14—19 education.

His report, published last month, called for high-quality vocational options for students.

Bell said it was also important to ensure the teachers were properly qualified.

The conference also heard from CBI director general Digby Jones, who said employers' needs were not met by the current vocational qualifications.

'What business wants is an education system that produces well-skilled youngsters who are motivated, independent and have the right attitude to work,' he said.
