Three NHS trusts' star ratings have been upgraded from two to three in the first formal review of performance ratings.
The Healthcare Commission said appeals from Mid-Essex Hospital Services trust, Addenbrooke's Trust (now Cambridge University Hospitals Foundation trust) and Teignbridge Primary Care Trust had been successful. However, the Commission rejected appeals from 16 other trusts.
The award was especially welcomed by the Cambridge trust, which had been criticised for losing a star and holding on to its foundation status.
Chief executive Malcolm Stamp said: 'We're all delighted with the news.'
