Government websites for unemployed people and benefit claimants are of poor quality, prone to malfunction and among the worst in the public sector, according to research by a web consultancy.

Problems include poor structures, servers unable to cope with demand and missing files. People using the Department for Work and Pensions, JobCentre and National Jobs and Learning websites are frequently presented with error messages.

Nicholas Le Seelleur, director of Business2WWW, which did the research, said: 'It's imperative that websites delivering public services are as faultless as possible. Otherwise the very people the government must encourage to use e-government services may be put off.'
