The number of empty homes in England fell last year by 11,050 to 718,720.
Jonathan Ellis, the Empty Homes Agency's chief executive, said there are 14,620 fewer empty council homes than a year ago, but registered social landlords reported a 6,106 increase in vacant properties.
'This would partly be accounted for by stock transfer but it does show the need for RSLs to be considering the use of shortlife tenancies,' he added.
