Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council has become the first to claim a reward from the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister for meeting its interim Local Public Service Agreement targets.

The council says it has met eight of the 11 targets. If confirmed, it will gain £700,000. If it achieves all its targets next year the total reward will be in excess of £5m, the ODPM said.

Tameside was among the original six pilots of the agreements. Almost 100 have now been signed.

The targets the council must still meet are: continuous service improvement; reduced secondary school truancies and exclusions; and increased numbers of pupils achieving good GCSE grades.
