Rabbi Julia Neuberger has announced she is to leave the King's Fund think-tank after six years as chief executive.

Neuberger, one of the most prominent figures in health service thinking, will leave the organisation early in 2004.

The fund, founded in 1897, relies on investments to pay for its work and the grants it awards academics and medical staff, but has been hit by the stock market's downturn.

'I have always said I would stay between five and seven years, and this timing feels right after making major changes in late 2002, which should be embedded by the end of this year,' she told Public Finance.

Neuberger is chair of the judging panel for Public Finance's Public Servants of the Year Awards, to be presented at a ceremony in London on May 12. She is also a member of the Committee on Standards in Public Life.

She is writing a book on values in public life. 'She is a considerable figure in health and will probably have a portfolio career,' said a spokeswoman for the fund.
