A replacement for Northern Ireland's 11-plus examination will be recommended by a working group before the end of October, the province's acting education minister, Jane Kennedy, has announced.

The group is to be chaired by Steve Costello, chair of the General Consumer Council, with representatives from Protestant, Catholic and integrated schools, the Council for Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment and further education.

Martin McGuinness, education minister until devolution was suspended in October, abolished the 11-Plus in the province in his last hours of work. The final 11-Plus examinations will be held next year.
