North Tyneside's elected mayor, Chris Morgan, has resigned after being questioned by police on suspicion of possessing indecent images of children.

Morgan, one of 11 US-style executive mayors elected since May 2002 and the only Conservative, announced his decision on April 19.

Last month he was arrested over allegations of indecent assault against a 15-year-old girl. The two issues are said to be unrelated.

A statement issued on his behalf by his solicitors proclaimed his innocence and said it was 'with great sadness' that he had tendered his resignation.

'Mr Morgan has always held a firm belief in and commitment to the people of North Tyneside and his political party, and has always sought to serve the same with integrity and decency,' the statement said.

A North Tyneside spokesman said elections for a new mayor would be held. A special meeting of the council will take place within days and a date for elections, likely to be some time in late June, set. The deputy mayor, Conservative group leader Lawrence Goveas, will take over in the meantime.

The authority's chief executive, John Marsden, said he would be holding discussions with senior councillors to ensure a smooth transition. 'I have an excellent team of new directors who will be working with me to ensure the continued smooth delivery of quality services,' he said.

Morgan has been bailed by Northumbria police until early June pending further inquiries.
