One in ten of those honoured on December 31 came from the education sector, Downing Street confirmed.

Professor Clive Booth, chair of the Teacher Training Agency, was knighted for his services to higher education. Booth was appointed chair of the TTA in 1997 and has overseen a period of consistent growth in the recruitment of teachers.

Two state school heads join Booth as recipients of the highest honours. Rita Weller of Avonmore primary in Hammersmith, London, becomes a dame and John Francis Jones of Maghull High School on Merseyside becomes a knight.

John Ward, chair of the Scottish Qualifications Agency, was also knighted.

Nigel Crisp, chief executive at the Department of Health and NHS, was among the many health service personnel honoured. Crisp received the prestigious Order of the Bath Knight Commander (KCB) for his work. CIPFA member Julie Acred, chief executive of the Southern Derbyshire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, was given an OBE for her services to health.

In local government, Howard Bernstein, chief executive of Manchester City Council, was knighted as was Sandy Bruce-Lockhart, Local Government Association vice-chair and leader of Kent County Council.
