Health minister John Hutton said: 'PPPs like these have enabled us to set in train one of the largest capital building programmes in the history of the NHS.'

Three schemes, at Barts and the London Trust, Central Middlesex Hospital and University Hospitals Birmingham Trust, make up the bulk of the package. They have a combined value of almost £1bn.
