The results of Medical Research Council trials, under which multiple sclerosis sufferers are being treated with cannabis-based medicines, are expected by the end of the year and will then be considered by Nice.

The Medicinal Cannabis Research Foundation welcomed plans for a rigorous appraisal of the benefits and problems of using cannabis for medicinal purposes. It said more research was needed into its use for conditions such as arthritis and epilepsy.

Executive director Nina Booth-Clibborn said: 'A large number of people have reported to us that cannabis helps them to manage severe medical conditions, even when prescription medicines have failed.'

Health minister Lord Philip Hunt said: 'If these pharmaceuticals are licensed for medical use, it is of critical importance that Nice guidance is in place.'

Nice will also test drugs for breast cancer and hepatitis patients.
