The delegation called on the minister to encourage shared-service partnerships under Best Value and to reduce the number of reviews undertaken in each authority. They also discussed CIPFA's progress in developing a professional code as part of a more flexible approach to capital spending.
'We suggested that attention should focus on fewer, but more focused, reviews. We also felt there were opportunities for the [Audit] Commission to look more closely at cross-cutting initiatives because they are somewhat harder to do,' Chris Hurford, CIPFA's president, told Public Finance.
Also present at the meeting were Steve Freer, CIPFA's chief executive, and Tony Redmond, chair of the institute's local government committee.
