Airline bosses have met Transport Secretary Stephen Byers to discuss the crisis in the industry following last week's terrorist attacks on the US. British Airways and Virgin Atlantic have urged the government to ensure UK carriers receive the same financial support as foreign rivals. Airlines are expected to shed thousands of jobs in the months to come as the combination of higher security costs and lower demand from passengers kicks in.
