More than 100 children homeless in one NI area

23 Aug 01
Some 163 children, half of them pre-school age, are living in temporary accommodation and classified as homeless in the Western Health and Social Services Board area of Northern Ireland, according to a report published this week.

24 August 2001

Causes for the homelessness were typically family breakdowns and rows between people who shared homes, according to the report by the Simon Community – a charity supporting homeless single people.

The vast majority of the homeless families are in Londonderry, which has twice the Northern Ireland average rate of homelessness.

The report recommends that there should be a limit on the time spent by families with children in temporary accommodation; an increase in self-contained temporary accommodation; the improvement of existing hostels; greater support for homeless families; and that families with school-age children should be located where the children can continue to attend existing schools
