More than 40% of government services are now available electronically, and this figure is set to reach 75% by 2002, according to statistics released this week by the Cabinet Office.

This puts government departments a year ahead of schedule and on course to hit Tony Blair's target of all services being available on-line by 2005. But much will depend on the success of the 'Government Gateway', which is due to be launched in the next few weeks.

The Gateway will allow secure transactions between citizens and departments. According to acting e-envoy Andrew Pinder, this will 'break down the primary barrier to getting all government services on-line by 2005'.

A decision about the appointment of a permanent
e-envoy is also expected soon, with final interviews thought to be taking place this week.

Public Finance will be examining the e-government targets as part of a major supplement in the spring. Readers wishing to contribute, and enter a competition to win a Wap phone, should fill in the survey on the website.
