Put the consumer first and be ambassadors for your service, public sector workers are being told.

28 April 2000

Speaking at the first meeting of the recently appointed 'consumer champions', who are supposed to give the customer a voice at the heart of government, Cabinet Office minister Ian McCartney said: 'Consumer focus is about putting yourself in the customer's shoes. It is about being an advocate for the citizen and an ambassador for the service.

'Consumers will benefit as their views are used to help design and improve the quality of their public services. Real consultation should make it as easy as possible for people to put their views forward.'
