A new training programme has been launched by the Improvement and Development Agency (Idea) to help prepare local government managers for new political arrangements and Best Value.

10 March 2000

The Modern Managers programme, launched on March 7, will more than triple the training provided by the agency, offering courses for up to 500 senior and middle managers a year.

It will replace Idea's Top Managers and Women's Leadership programmes, and is designed to reflect forthcoming legislation and the latest trends in local government.

The programme is expected to cover Best Value, the impact of new technology on service delivery, the Beacon council scheme and involving the community. Courses will be 'intensive and modular' and will be designed to allow managers to exchange ideas on best practice.

Specific courses for women and ethnic minority people will also be offered as part of the revised programme.
