CIPFA has appointed a Northamptonshire commissioner as associate director of local government.

Brian Roberts, who has been finance commissioner in Northamptonshire since May 2018, will join CIPFA on a part-time advisory role.

The former CIPFA president will continue his work at Northamptonshire County Council, which recently slashed its projected overspend from £64m to £1.

Rob Whiteman, CIPFA chief executive, said: “We are delighted that Brian is joining the institute as his vast experience and technical knowledge will be an invaluable asset for CIPFA, especially in our link to CFOs and other major stakeholders.

“CIPFA is focused on strengthening finance teams with the guidance, tools and services they need to navigate the difficult period ahead.”

Roberts has previously held finance roles at Leicester City Council, Staffordshire County Council, Hampshire County Council and the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames.

Roberts said: “Reduced funding along with increasing demand for services, particularly in social care, is straining local authorities’ finance. Right now is a pivotal time for local government in a public sector landscape which is rapidly changing.

“The key priorities for me are the financial sustainability of local authorities, the future of local government finance, and addressing sound prudential borrowing by local authorities. I am very much looking forward to kick starting my work at CIPFA by discussing and reviewing these challenges with my colleagues, and ensuring strong relationships between CIPFA and the sector.”
