Essex County Council chief executive Gavin Jones is to take over as interim chair of the Society of Local Authority Chief Executives (Solace) until the organisation’s AGM in October.

Jones is replacing Gateshead chief executive Jane Robinson who is leaving local government for a post in academia.

Announcing Jones’ interim appointment, Solace president Mark Rogers said: “Gavin has been involved with Solace for some time and plays a leading role on the Solace in Business Board. We are thrilled he feels able to take on this important role while we go through the process of electing to a range of important Solace roles which will conclude in October.”

Jones added that Solace does “fantastic work” in terms of supporting learning and development and lobbying on behalf of the sector.

“With the public sector facing such unparalleled challenges and opportunities to reform, an organisation such as Solace that brings us together is more important than ever, and it is an honour to be asked to chair ahead of a formal appointment being made,” he said.
