Alf Saunders, a former finance director of Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council, died on February 5.
Alf’s career in local government began at Worthing, where he started his studies for the IMTA, the predecessor to CIPFA. From there he transferred to Stratford upon Avon, and then moved into the Tonbridge area in 1966 having secured the post of deputy treasurer for the Tonbridge Urban District Council.
On reorganisation in 1974, Alf transferred to the newly formed Tonbridge & Malling District Council (later to become a borough council) where he held the position of assistant finance director.
In June 1981, he was promoted to the position of finance director until he retired in April 1990.
