David Walker has demolished the fashionable nonsense from the political parties in favour of civic activism (‘Drama out of a crisis’, May 7-13).

But he needs to be constructive and champion representative democracy through elected local government.

Because of the defects he superbly detects in the movement to mobilise participation, he should advocate elected local councils as the way to combine responsiveness to citizens with the capacity to govern their localities.
