Public Finance has announced the winners of the 2009 Future Leaders competition, recognising ten outstanding potential leaders in public sector financial management.

The winners come from all parts of the public services and will be presented with their awards by CIPFA president Roger Latham at a ceremony on October 1. They were chosen for their leadership skills and for their potential to rise to the top of their careers.

Chair of the judging panel Adrian Pulham said that the Future Leaders all had the ‘right stuff’ to progress to very senior roles. ‘Our winners have enthusiasm, commitment and a determination to succeed,’ he said. ‘They lead by example and have the people skills as well as the technical know-how.’

The Future Leaders initiative, now in its second year, is organised by PF and CIPFA in association with Hays Accountancy & Finance.
Pulham, CIPFA’s director of education and training, said that strong leaders would be required as the public sector learned to deal with a funding slowdown. ‘In the new era of austerity, public sector finance managers will need a different skill-set. They will have to prove that every penny is spent appropriately and efficiently.’

The other members of the judging panel were: Roger Latham; Jaki Meekings, CIPFA vice president; John Butler, past CIPFA president; Nick Jackson, Treasury head of finance professionalism; Jon Roberts, a partner at Grant Thornton; Judith Savage, chair of CIPFA’s National Student Forum; Andy Robling, public services director, Hays Accountancy & Finance; and Mike Thatcher, editor, Public Finance.
