Pipe, a corporate governance adviser at Transport for London, scored 1,713 votes, well ahead of former CIPFA president Diane Colley, who came second with 1,614. Sarah Wood, interim director of resources at the Home Office, came third with 1,603 votes.

Nine of the 2007/08 council's 21 elected members are female, up from seven this year. These include Claire Gravil, management accountant at Doncaster & Bassetlaw Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, an existing co-opted member who has now been elected in her own right; and Jane Cuthbertson, senior auditor at North Tyneside Council, a former member who is rejoining.

There are also two new faces: Caroline Al-Beyerty, head of audit practice at the Audit Commission; and Martin Sinclair, who is assistant auditor general at the National Audit Office.

For the first time, institute members were able to vote on the internet as well as by post; 12.3% of ballots were cast in this way.

The full council also includes seven regional representatives and four officers: John Butler, the incoming president; Caroline Mawhood, the next vice-president; Caroline Gardner, the outgoing president; and Mike Barnes, the institute's incoming treasurer. A maximum of eight co-options can also be made.

The turnout was 22.2%, down from 25.1% in the 2006/07 elections.
