Information technology firms that win government contracts will be obliged to invest in skills and training, it has been announced.

Skills Secretary John Denham said on May 21 that the £14bn a year the government pays providers should be used to help young people.

‘IT is one of the industries which is critical to the future of the British economy and its ability to survive and thrive post-recession,’ said Denham.

Government departments and agencies will now be committed to ensuring successful contractors have a workforce development plan.
