Council-owned housing companies have been told they can pay board members in the same way as registered social landlords.

New government guidance suggests the payment system for arm's-length management organisations will be similar to that for RSL boards.

Almos had been waiting for a decision from the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister before considering whether to introduce payments.

But Gwyneth Taylor, policy officer at the National Federation of Almos, doubted whether there would be a huge take-up. 'Board members aren't happy about losing the voluntary ethos,' she said. 'It could put them in a difficult position if they are perceived to be doing it for money.'
