Northern Ireland's water service will be run by a government-owned company – a GoCo – similar to Royal Mail and British Nuclear Fuels, the province's regional development minister John Spellar has announced.

The decision came after prolonged consultation over possible models for the restructuring of the service, currently an executive agency of the Department for Regional Development.

'It is vital that the new organisation tasked with the delivery of Northern Ireland's water and sewerage services is given the freedoms and flexibilities it needs,' said Spellar.

'I believe the GoCo model offers the greatest potential to achieve this goal.'
