The health service has been given the all clear by the NHS Modernisation Board, the body set up to advise the government on progress.

In its annual report delivered this week to Prime Minister Tony Blair and Health Secretary John Reid, the board said investments in the NHS were paying off in service improvements and patient satisfaction. The report says there have been huge improvements in cancer care, A&E and the treatment of chronic diseases.

But it adds: 'There is still a way to go before everyone, everywhere is receiving the kind of treatment we would want for our families and ourselves.'
