Efforts by schools to improve the attainment of Bangladeshi pupils are well focused and effective, according to a report by education watchdog Ofsted.

It found that providing pupils with continuing support in learning and using English was a critical factor in raising their overall levels of achievement.

The report recommended that schools should adapt curriculums to reflect the heritage of Bangladeshi pupils and use performance data to monitor progress and produce action plans for improvement. It also said schools should use bilingual staff to develop links with families.

The report found that pupils had great confidence in their teachers to deal firmly with racist incidents and that parents believed schools played an important role in counteracting negative influences, such as criminality, experienced by their children.

Ofsted chief David Bell said: 'This report highlights the good work that is being done by schools to improve the educational experience of Bangladeshi pupils.'
