A former chief executive of the North of Scotland Water Authority, Katharine Bryan, is to be the new chief executive of the Northern Ireland Water Service.

Bryan, a water biologist, has stepped down from her position as chair of the Committee on Radioactive Waste Management to take on the new role.

Bryan said: 'I'm looking forward to applying my experience to help steer the water service through a major programme of reinvestment and reform.

She added: 'My remit will involve delivering a major increase in capital investment to ensure we comply with European standards for drinking water quality and the treatment of waste water.'
