The British Medical Association has called on NHS managers to help stamp out racism against doctors from ethnic minorities.

A BMA survey published this week found that almost nine out of ten young doctors from an ethnic minority believed the colour of their skin significantly affected their career.

More than 60% said ethnicity played a decisive role in whether a student was accepted for medical school, while 87% said it could affect their chances of getting a job in the specialism they wanted.

Dr Vivienne Nathanson, the BMA's head of science and ethics, said: 'Individuals are not getting equitable opportunities. Managers can take immediate steps to improve the situation.'
