5 Dec 02
The highly respected chair of the Bristol heart scandal inquiry will be the first chair of the Commission for Healthcare Audit and Inspection (Chai).

06 December 2002

Professor Sir Ian Kennedy has taken on the £90,000 a year post of the new NHS super-inspectorate, which is expected to be formally launched in April 2004.

Kennedy, whose Bristol inquiry prompted the health secretary to establish an independent inspectorate, was appointed by the NHS Appointments Commission.

Chai will merge the Commission for Health Improvement and the National Care Standards Commission, together with the Audit Commission's health value-for-money work. It will inspect both the NHS and the private health care sector.
