Livingstone defers Tube court action

Mayor Ken Livingstone has backed away from taking London Underground managers to court, for the time being.

Last week he threatened returning to the courts to get crucial figures on the total cost and risk transfer under the public-private partnership scheme.

He maintained that despite repeated requests, he had not seen the relevant information. This was supposed to have been passed to him as part of the mandatory consultation process after the government's decision to proceed with the PPP last month.

But managers at the Underground have now decided to put back the end of the consultation period until March 22, allowing more time for the mayor to see the documents he wants.

A spokesman for Transport for London said it was happy with the extension but court proceedings could not be ruled out in the future. He said: 'The threat of legal action has allowed us to get information out of the Underground.'

The latest development came as there was continuing concern over whether or not the PPP contracts with the consortiums which will take over the running of the Tube have been finalised.
