Birmingham City Council's leader, Sir Albert Bore, will be elected president of the Committee of the Regions (CoR) next week, Public Finance has learnt.

The Cor, a European Union institution, promotes regional and local government's interests to Brussels decision-makers. According to a source close to the committee, Bore's election is the result of a deal between the two main political blocs.

Bore, who led the Party of European Socialists in the committee's previous incarnation, will get the top job when it convenes for a new four-year term in Brussels on February 6. The committee's vice-president will be drawn from the European Popular Party, the main Right-of-centre grouping.

'Bore will serve as president for the first two years of the committee's new term, then he'll stand down and his vice-president will take over the presidency,' the source said.

But this deal would change if Bore wins a seat on the EU convention on institutional reform, due to convene later this month, which he is said to be keen to join. 'If that happens,

they will swap and he will be vice-president for the first two years, and then take over the presidency in 2004,' the source added.

Meanwhile, the 48-strong British delegation to the committee has re-elected Ken Bodfish, leader of Brighton and Hove City Council, as its leader for the next four years.
