Under existing rules, doctors who are being investigated over their professional performance cannot be given an interim suspension from the medical register while an inquiry is carried out.
But the fallout from the conviction of GP Harold Shipman for multiple murder has forced the GMC to consider closing the loophole which allows doctors who are a potential threat to patients to carry on working while they are under investigation.
Dr Krishna Korlipara, a GMC member, said: 'We must introduce some methods of suspension so those proved guilty of serious offences do not get away with it in the way they appear to have done.'
The GMC is appointing a director of professional communications to try and improve its image, following recent scandals.
