A government drive to bring social housing up to the decent homes standard by the end of 2010 is set to go to the wire.

Last year, 69,005 properties owned by registered social landlords were improved, leaving 251,586 still below standard. This includes 27,035 transferred to RSLs from local authorities in 2007/08.

The Housing Corporation's annual report said that at the present rate of progress, 44,571 homes will remain 'non-decent' in two years' time — about 2% of the 1.98 million owned by housing associations. But the report, published on July 22, adder that most of these should be improved in the latter part of 2010.

A government panel has agreed a later deadline for about 9,000 homes affected by regeneration schemes. The Department for Communities and Local Government is also likely to extend the deadline for homes transferred from councils in the next two years.

The report praised housing associations and other developers for building 51,095 homes for rent and low-cost ownership last year — 3,832 above target.
